The Proust Questionnaire

According to Proust, the French essayist and novelist, a writer’s authentic self could be accessed only through careful reading of their work, and the “true voice of the heart” found there should be sharply distinguished from mere “small-talk.” Marcel Proust believed that in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature. Something a little more me for you to read 🙂

  1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
    • The feeling of freedom of doing whatever, whenever, and however. When I am laughing freely without a care.
    • Setting goals and hitting them.
    • The awe-inspiring feeling that comes with a magnificent sunset.
    • Feeling taken care of by my lovely clients who genuinely want me to succeed and be happy.
    • Being unequivocally spoiled. Lavished with gifts and experiences.
  2. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
    • My impatience.
  3. What is the trait you most deplore in others?
    • Stinginess – This spirit applies to everything! Or when everything is quid pro quo. Can’t stand it.
  4. What is your greatest extravagance?
    • Giving myself the time to take a gap year.
    • Honestly, ‘m really bad at giving nice things to myself. I very much prefer receiving gifts.
  5. What is your current state of mind?
    • I have been feeling like I’ve been pulled in multiple directions and I’ll probably need to conduct some sort of audit on my life soon.
  6. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
    • The idea of being “nice”.
  7. What do you most dislike about your appearance?
    • That I wasn’t more photogenic. I always think I look way better in person than I do in selfies.
  8. What is the quality you most like in a man?
    • A sense of duty, and hands that make me feel safe.
  9. What is the quality you most like in a woman?
    • The way she would kiss, and a feisty spirit.
  10. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
    • “Vibes”.
  11. What or who is the greatest love of your life?
    • I haven’t found it in another person yet.
  12. When and where were you happiest?
    • I was stargazing on one of the Galapagos Islands, after a day of trekking, feeding giant tortoises, and eating street food for dinner.
    • Separate from that, I derive great joy from sunsets.
  13. Which talent would you most like to have?
    • Picking up multiple languages with ease. I would love to learn Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, and Japanese.
  14. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
    • A pampered border collie.
  15. Where would you most like to live?
    • Amalfi Coast, Italy.
  16. What is your most treasured possession?
    • A Herschel backpack that has followed me to the ends of the earth for many years.
  17. What is your favourite occupation?
    • I do not dream of labour. Second option is obviously a spoiled girlfriend to many. 😉
  18. What is your most marked characteristic?
    • Perhaps my candidness.
  19. What do you most value in your friends?
    • Loyalty + reliability. There is no substitute.
  20. Who are your favourite writers?
    • The Brönte Sisters.
  21. Who is your hero of fiction?
    • Ironman.
  22. Who are your heroes in real life?
    • My parents.
  23. What are your favourite names?
    • Rebecca, of course! It is a feminine given name originating from the Hebrew language. The name comes from the verb רבק (rbq), meaning “to tie firmly”, “beautifully ensnarling”. The Bible Name list suggests that it means captivating beauty, or “to tie”, “to bind”. Maybe it’s why I have a lot of returning lovers. 😉
  24. How would you like to die?
    • Peacefully in my sleep, of old age and in good health, in my sleep.
  25. What is your motto?
    • You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

Yes, you’ll notice some are missing! I removed some of the darker questions for this one as I didn’t feel comfortable writing it out on here, but I’m not afraid to talk about it in person if our conversation happens to lead that way.

Many kisses,
